On August 19th, 2005, the Westwood Fire Company Ambulance Division was honored as the Pennsylvania Ambulance Service of the Year by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council. Being in service as a BLS unit for less than 5 years, this was quite an accomplishment for our members and our Company. In 1998, the Westwood Fire Company took interest in providing EMS services to our Community and obtained licensure to provide a Quick Response Service, or "QRS," in which our members would respond to the scenes of medical emergencies in fire apparatus and provide care until a transporting ambulance would arrive. After almost 2 very successful years of providing QRS service, the Fire Company once again re-evaluated and decided to purchase a transport Ambulance. After many long hours of paperwork, meetings, research, and fundraising, the Company purchased our first Ambulance and began operating as a Basic Life Support Ambulance on November 16th, 2000. | Our First Ambulance 1997 Ford Osage | Just before our five year anniversary of providing Ambulance Service to our Community, we received the award as Pennsylvania's Ambulance Service of the Year. This was an unbelievable honor to our dedicated volunteers and the service they provide. The award is presented to a service who demonstrates participation in community oriented activities, such as CPR Training, School Programs, and EMS Week activities, a consistent pattern of rapid response times and staffing levels, and personnel training, continuing education and professional development. | | | | | Personnel outside the Awards Ceremony proudly displaying the Ambulance Service of the Year poster | Our group after receiving the plaque from the Department of Health at the Annual State Awards Banquet | | Link to Daily Local News Article about our Award | The Westwood Fire Company is a certified Department of Health Continuing Education site, and we currently budget $15,000 a year dedicated solely to EMS training of our personnel. The Fire Company still operates our Quick Response Service for times when our Ambulance is unavailable or on other emergencies. All of our fire and EMS personnel are trained in first aid and CPR, with 95% of our crew being cross trained as Emergency Medical Technicians or Paramedics. Each piece of apparatus, as well as all of our Fire & EMS Chief Officers personal vehicles are equipped with full medical bags including Oxygen and Automatic External Defibrillators. We also have an AED in our Station's Bingo Hall and provide them to key community locations through our Public Access Defibrillator program. We are currently the only full time 100% volunteer Fire and Ambulance service in the County of Chester and we respond to over 1,200 combined calls annually with all volunteer crews. | Chester County Commissioners & Valley Township Supervisors honor our State Award | | | On Tuesday, December 20th, 2005 the Ambulance Division was given Congressional Honors by Congressman Jim Gerlach, Senator John Rafferty, and State Representative Tim Hennessey at the Valley Township meeting for our Pennsylvania Ambulance Service of the Year 2005 Award | As it says on the side of our Ambulance, we are "Proud to be 100% Volunteer."
