Brush Fire on the Route 30 Bypass
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Battalion Chief John Sly
March 20, 2011

On Sunday, March 20th, 2011 the Fire Company was dispatched at 1130 to the Westbound Route 30 Bypass West of Route 82 for a reported brush fire.

Tac 44, Traffic 44, Ambulance 44-2, and Engine 44-5 all responded within 9 minutes of dispatch.

Battalion Chief Sly arrived on the scene and reported a 50' x 100' area of brush along the roadbank involved in fire. Due to winds, the fire was traveling over the embankment and encroaching on the Valley Farm Development on the north side of the fire.

For this reason, Battalion 44 instructed Tac 44 and Ambulance 44-2 to proceed to North Mount Airy Road to access the fire from the top for the protection of the homes in the development. Engine 44-5 and Traffic 44 were instructed to proceed to the Bypass.

Crews arrived on both sides of the fire and began immediate suppression efforts. At this time, Battalion Chief Sly established "Bypass Command" and requested the Wagontown Fire Company to respond to the scene with two Brush units to assist with overhauling the area.

Wagontown Brush 35-3 was requested by Command to respond to the Bypass while Brush 35-2 was requested to respond to North Mount Airy Road to assist crews operating on the top side of the fire.

The fire was officially placed under control at 1204.

Firefighters from Westwood and Wagontown remained on scene for approximately 35 more minutes to rake the entire area and remove smoldering timber so that reignition would not occur.

All units cleared the scene at 1242.

Thanks to the Wagontown Fire Company's Forestry crews for your assistance!

Units: Tac 44, Engine 44-5, Traffic 44, and Ambulance 44-2

Mutual Aid: Wagontown Brush 35-2 and Brush 35-3
