Second Record Breaking Month of Responses
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By EMS Chief John Sly
July 1, 2013

On Monday, July 1st, 2013 the Fire and EMS Chiefs completed their monthly call reviews of the previous month and noted, for the second month in a row, that Westwood Fire and EMS units responded to a record high number of emergency calls.

In May, 2013 Ambulance 44 responding out of the Main Station in Valley Township responded to 107 calls for service. This was the first time in our history that our ambulance service responded to more than 100 calls from the Westwood station since our inception in November, 2000.

However, this record was short lived as the following month proved to be one call busier, with Ambulances 44-1 and 44-2 responding to 108 calls for service in June.

In addition, Ambulance 144 responding out of the Wagontown station responded to 109 calls, for a total of 217 emergencies for our Ambulance Division during June. This represents the fourth highest call volume in one month for the Wagontown Division since beginning operations in August, 2011.

As of the half way point of the year, the ambulances operating out of the Main Station are 124 calls ahead of this point in 2012 and the ambulance operating out of the Wagontown Station is 80 calls ahead of this mid-point of the previous year.

This trend will represent more than a 20% increase in service demands for the year.

Westwood Ambulance 144 is staffed by a 24/7 career roster of Emergency Medical Technicians also crossed trained as Nationally Certified Firefighters and responds on a primary basis to all medical calls in West Caln and West Brandywine Townships, and a portion of Wallace and East Brandywine Townships.

Ambulances 44-1 and 44-2 are operated by a combination of career staffing and dedicated volunteers to respond to calls in all of Valley Township, and half of East Fallowfield Township in addition to mutual aid responses in Sadsbury Township, Highland Township, and Parkesburg Borough.

The Fire/Rescue division of the Company responded to 41 emergency calls in June, representing an average of more than 1 emergency per day. Our firefighters are primarily all volunteer with two career staff members on duty to assist with supplementing volunteers during the daytime hours of 0800-1800.

The Officers would like to express our sincere appreciation for our dedicated volunteers who have continued to ensure appropriate staffing of our units to maintain high quality services to the community.

The Westwood Fire Company is always accepting applications for membership! Please see our recruitment section for more information.
